ESSAY 2: PROFILE / FEATURE REPORT (INFORMATIONAL WRITING)
FORMAL OUTLINE: A formal outline is the writer's detailed plan for the development of the essay. It should reflect the full organizational scheme of the entire essay in a particular formal academic style. This means, the writer is to use Roman numerals for the first level of major divisions of the essay; capital letters for major supporting points; and numbering for details of development. The thesis of the essay needs to be typed at the top, and the outline does need to state every major point in the organizational development of the writer's essay in complete sentences. I have posted two student-written examples below. Note that each is just showing part of the essay--but you can see the organizational plan of each essay and how the formal outline would progress.
